About me and my therapy practice
Hi, my name is Jac (she/her).
I'm a queer, integrative, trauma informed counsellor working in person in Leeds, online and by phone.
Working with an integrative approach I tailor my sessions to fit you and your needs. I enjoy working collaboratively with you and find this is the best way to help you make progress. I won't leave you sat in silence the whole session if you're feeling stuck for what to say, but I also won't push you to talk about anything you're not ready to.
We'll work together to tackle whatever it is you're going through and find a way to get you out the other side, to the place you want to be.
I trained as a counsellor after going through my own challenges with my mental health. I found counselling very helpful when I was struggling. I know what it's like to be on your side of the dynamic and so I'll do everything I can to make the process feel as easy possible for you.
I aim to create a safe and inclusive space, somewhere you can feel at ease and free to be yourself.
I am neurodiverse aware and affirming. I'm dyslexic myself and I am happy to make accommodations and find different approaches that work well for you.
My practice is LGBTQIA+, sex worker, kink, ENM and polyamory friendly.
I am also aware that as a white counsellor I can never know what it feels like to experience racism but I am committed to anti racism both as a personal value and through my work.
If you have any apprehension around starting therapy as someone who has experienced any form of marginalisation, stigma or othering I would welcome you to reach out and would be happy to talk through any concerns you may have.
Practice description
I work experientially and draw from modalities including person centred, emotionally focused and psychodynamic. I am also trained in trauma informed and trauma focused therapy.
How the sessions will look can vary quite a bit, because I work with an integrative approach I don't have just one way of working and so I can tailor my approach based on what works best for you.
The session can simply be a safe place for you to talk through how you are feeling and help you process your experiences, while being really listened to and understood. They can be somewhere to go a bit deeper and explore earlier experiences, patterns and dynamics and how these affect and impact you. We can work on specific techniques and strategies to help you manage things like anxiety, stress and depression. You can use the sessions to work through past traumas and I have different techniques we can use to do this as easily as possible.
If we're working in a trauma focused way I will introduce a bit more structure by working with the three phase approach. This means we'll start by focusing on safety and stability. Processing traumatic memories can be emotionally dysregulating and I want to make sure you're safe and can manage between sessions without feeling overwhelmed. We'll go through some techniques and strategies you can use to help regulate your nervous system and emotions. When you feel ready we can move on to processing the memories. Phase three would be working with anything remaining for you that you would want to work on or resolve, after those traumatic memories have been processed.
Everyone is unique and so if you're thinking about having counselling I would invite you to get in touch and lets have a chat.
